AEO Content Refresh Checklist: Keeping Pages Citable

An AEO content refresh is the process of updating existing pages so they maintain or regain their status as cited sources in AI-generated search answers. Content that earned AI citations in 2025 will not necessarily earn them in 2026. Statistics become outdated, competitors publish fresher content, and AI models evolve their source selection criteria. A systematic refresh keeps your pages citable.

Why Does Content Freshness Matter for AI Citations?

Gartner predicts traditional search volume will drop 25% by 2026 as users shift to AI tools. In that environment, the content that earns citations is not just the content that exists -- it is the content that remains current, accurate, and structurally optimized for AI extraction. OtterlyAI's research shows that AI search engines now generate over 18 billion responses per day, and each response prioritizes recently updated content. Pages that cite outdated statistics lose citations to fresher sources.

Freshness matters to AI models for specific, observable reasons. AI search engines weight recency in their source selection because users expect up-to-date information. A page that cites a statistic from 2023 when a competitor's page cites the same statistic from a 2026 source will lose the citation to the fresher page. This is not an algorithmic quirk. It is a direct consequence of AI models being designed to prefer current information.

What Should You Check in a Pre-Refresh Audit?

Before updating any content, verify what needs changing:

Citation status check. Run the page's target query in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Is the page currently cited? If not, when did it lose its citation? If you do not have historical data, note whether competitors are cited for this query.

Competitor comparison. Pull up the pages that are currently cited for your target query. Compare their content to yours across these dimensions: recency of statistics, depth of coverage, structure of headings, and presence of extractable data points.

Traffic and ranking data. Check Google Search Console for traffic trends on the page. A declining traffic trend combined with stable rankings often indicates that AI Overviews are capturing clicks your organic listing previously received.

Content staleness score. For each statistic, data point, and example on the page, check the source date. If more than 40% of your data points are more than 2 years old, the page needs a significant refresh, not a minor update.

What Is the AEO Content Refresh Checklist?

1. Update the Opening Paragraph

The first 100 to 150 words are the most heavily weighted section for AI extraction. During a refresh:

  • Ensure the first sentence directly answers the target query
  • Update any time-sensitive claims ("as of 2025" becomes "as of 2026")
  • Add the most current and impactful statistic to the opening paragraph

2. Replace Outdated Statistics

Every statistic on the page should reference a source from the current or previous year when possible. For each outdated stat:

  • Search for a more recent version of the same data point
  • If no newer data exists, note the source year explicitly ("according to 2024 McKinsey research")
  • Remove statistics that can no longer be verified against their original source

3. Update Entity and Product Information

AI models track entities -- companies, products, people, and concepts. During a refresh:

  • Update product names, pricing, and feature lists if the content references specific products
  • Check that company names and ownership structures are current (acquisitions, rebrands)
  • Add new entities that have become relevant to the topic since the original publication

4. Restructure Headings for Current Query Patterns

Query patterns shift over time. Headings that were effective in 2025 may not match how users phrase queries in 2026:

  • Review People Also Ask data and AI prompt data for your target queries
  • Adjust H2 and H3 headings to match current query phrasing
  • Add new sub-question headings that cover topics competitors have introduced

5. Improve Information Architecture for AI Extraction

Each refresh is an opportunity to improve structural extractability:

  • Ensure every section's key point appears in the first sentence
  • Convert narrative paragraphs into bulleted or numbered lists where appropriate
  • Add or update structured data markup (FAQ schema, Article schema, HowTo schema)
  • Verify that all important information exists in HTML text, not images or JavaScript-loaded elements

6. Add Recent External Citations

AI models trust content that demonstrates sourcing rigor:

  • Add citations to new industry reports, studies, or authoritative sources published since the original page
  • Link to primary sources, not blog posts summarizing them
  • Include named institutions and researchers when citing studies

7. Update the lastUpdated Date

After completing the refresh, update the lastUpdated date in the page's metadata. AI models and search engines use this as a direct freshness signal. A page with lastUpdated: 2026-06-05 signals recency that a page last updated in 2024 cannot match.

How Should Refresh Cadence Vary by Content Type?

Different content types degrade at different rates:

Pricing and comparison pages. Refresh every 3 to 6 months. Pricing changes, competitors change features, and outdated pricing information directly undermines trust with both users and AI models.

Statistics and data pages. Refresh every 6 months or whenever a major new industry report is published. These pages lose citability quickly as their data ages.

Definitional and evergreen pages. Refresh every 12 to 18 months. These pages age more slowly but benefit from updated examples, current-year statistics in introductory paragraphs, and structural improvements.

How-to and tutorial pages. Refresh when the underlying process changes. If the software you are documenting releases a new version, your tutorial loses accuracy and citability immediately.

How Do You Measure Refresh Impact?

After a content refresh, measure the outcome:

Short-term (2 to 4 weeks). Check whether the refreshed page has earned new or restored AI citations for its target queries. Run the query in Perplexity and Google and note citation status.

Medium-term (1 to 3 months). Monitor traffic trends in Google Search Console. A successful refresh should either stabilize declining traffic or modestly increase traffic.

Long-term (3 to 6 months). Compare citation rates before and after the refresh. If multiple pages were refreshed, calculate the aggregate citation rate improvement across the refreshed set.
